The Story Behind the Tracts

In 1988, a Bible college assignment changed the course of one man's life. Rev. Art Wilmoth was given a simple task: write one Gospel Tract. That single assignment ignited a passion for evangelism that has endured for over three decades and continues to this day.

Long before the age of easy digital access, desktop publishing, and instant file sharing, Brother Wilmoth turned to a Multilith printing press — a workhorse of a machine that could churn out thousands of copies at a time. He set the type, mixed the ink, loaded the paper, and printed each tract by hand.

What began with one tract grew into an entire library of Gospel materials: pocket-sized soul-winning guides, door hangers, post cards, note pads, and tracts covering every facet of the salvation message. Each piece was designed with one purpose — to clearly and simply present the good news of Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world.

"You have our express permission to use these Gospel Tracts in any way that will bring glory to God, and edify the local church."
— Brother Wilmoth

What Are Gospel Tracts?

From the time of the resurrection of the Son of God on the third day, men discovered new ways to publish the good news of salvation through faith in Christ. The printed tract has been one of the most enduring and effective tools in the history of evangelism.

The Gospel message of salvation is a mystery to the lost; their eyes are blinded, and their hearts darkened naturally. This is called the Adamic nature — the sinful condition inherited by every human being since the fall. Gospel Tracts are little sermons of the preaching of the cross of Christ, and His resurrection from the dead.

"Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh."
— Romans 1:3

A well-written tract can go where the preacher cannot. It can be read and re-read. It can be left on a table, tucked into a book, handed to a stranger, or mailed across the world. The printed Gospel has started revivals, changed hearts, and led countless souls to saving faith in Christ.

How to Use Gospel Tracts Effectively

Always start with a personal testimony if possible. A witness speaks the truth about what they know on a personal level — what they have personally experienced. Not second hand. When you share what Christ has done in your own life, it carries an authenticity that cannot be argued away.

Gospel Tracts are most effective after one is exposed to the Son of God from a follower of Christ. They serve as a tangible reminder of the conversation and the truth that was shared. They can also be left with someone who has expressed a desire to read more, or placed in a location where they might catch the eye of a seeking heart.

Always include some contact information — an imprint of a local church address or website for follow-up. The tract opens the door; the local church walks alongside the new believer on their journey of faith.

Practical Tips for Tract Distribution

  • Carry tracts with you wherever you go — in your pocket, purse, or car
  • Leave them with your tip at a restaurant, on a park bench, or in a waiting room
  • Use door hangers for neighborhood outreach
  • Mail post cards to friends, family, and neighbors
  • Always be ready to share your own testimony alongside the written word
  • Pray before, during, and after every encounter
